“Am I crying?” I looked at Leo, then Katie. “I feel like I’m crying, or that at least I should be.” Without waiting for a response, I plunged my fork into the huge square of tiramisu that sat on the table between the three of us, cut off a very unladylike portion, stuffed it into my mouth, and practically melted through the floor of the bakery and into the bookshop.

Katie and Leo both stared. From beside the table, Watson did as well.

I ignored them all, swallowing half the bite, then reaching for the steaming mug of dirty chai and taking a large sip, letting the flavors of the dessert and latte combine into pure ecstasy. After several more seconds—all too brief—of savoring, I swallowed. “I had no idea how much I needed that.” I started to scoop another portion, and then was hit by a stroke of brilliance. “Katie, for my next birthday, or Christmas, or just because it happens to be a Tuesday, will you make this again, and at the same time make the chocolate espresso torte, some dirty-chai-flavored macaroons, a few coffee-infused cream puffs, and—”

“A caffeinated overload, yes, I got it.” Katie chuckled. “Although I kinda did that for your fortieth birthday.”

“True, but this wasn’t there!” I stuffed another bite into my mouth. “Tiramisu isn’t even my thing, or at least I didn’t think it was.”

Leo sliced his fork through, taking a much smaller sliver. “I’ve got to hand it to you, Katie, my dear, it’s better than Pasta Thyme’s. I have no idea how that’s even possible, but it is.”

Katie wiggled her fingers in the air. “I’m magic.”

“You really, really are.” I still spoke with my mouth full, and did the same thing with another drink of the dirty chai.

Realizing it wasn’t going to happen, Watson let out an annoyed huff, started to head over to his favorite table in the bakery to nap, but then seemed to decide we didn’t deserve his presence and tore off down the stairs to find Ben.

The three of us sat there in comfortable silence for several more minutes as we finished the huge piece of tiramisu that was nearly half the pan Katie had made that morning.

The breakfast rush was over, so other than Nick prepping several different recipes in the kitchen, we had the bakery to ourselves. Leo didn’t have to go to work until later that afternoon, and though he hadn’t said as much, I got the sense he was belaboring going off to get his own errands done because he didn’t want to leave me alone after the night before. Which was fine by me. I did believe Branson—that Leo was the last person he would ever hurt—but I couldn’t help recalling the dark truth I’d heard at what he wished he could do to Leo.

“All right.” Katie leaned forward, both hands flat on the table. “You’re caffeinated, we’re on our own, fill me in.”

I’d told Katie something had happened the night before but hadn’t gone
